Most researchers believe he was born in Bedford County, Virginia, though by some accounts, he was born at Mayhewtown, Iredell County, N.C., where his parents moved from Virginia at an early date.

At any rate, he moved to Camden, S.C., from Iredell County, N.C., about 1815 and began his medical practice. By 1820, his teen-aged brother George had joined him in Camden. Dr. Mayhew married Mrs. Jane Peach Duren, widow of Thomas Duren Jr. of Hanging Rock.

In 1834 he was elected by the "Union Party," representing Kershaw Dist. in the S.C. state legislature, 1834-1835.
