Some records give his name James C. Mayhew while tombstones of wife and daughter say J.A.C. Mayhew. Some researchers show him James Constantine Mayhew, apparently named for his uncle James Constantine Mayhew.

Born in Loudoun or Bedford Co., Virginia, he came to South Carolina from Iredell County, North Carolina where his parents died.
There is apparently no marker for him in the family cemetery where his family is buried.

Children with his first wife, Mary:
1. Joseph Harlan b. Dec. 15, 1813
2. Hester Ann b. 1814 m. William Brandon
3. Mary

Children with his second wife was Sarah O. Mitchell, sister of Rice Mitchell:
Elizabeth T. Mayhew c1827-
Sarah W. Mayhew c1827-

See Descendants of James Mayhew by Helen Handley.

Joseph Harlan Mayhew removed to Pickens County, Alabama, and is thought to have visited his uncle George W. Mayhew in Grenada, Mississippi. Some researchers claim that Joseph H. Mayhew's daughter Mary first married Franklin P. Ingram of Grenada, a nephew of George W. Mayhew's wife. This has not been adequately proven and may be confusing two Frank Ingrams and two Marys.

To add further confusion, descendants of another couple have claimed the Grenada couple, saying they moved from Wisconsin to Colorado and stopped in Grenada, Mississippi, along the way to Colorado. This is obviously incorrect as the Wisconsin man was a Union soldier and the couple in Grenada, Miss. were slave and plantation owners. If Mary Mayhew of Pickens Co., Alabama married this George Ingram, she returned to Alabama and remarried after his death.
