Johanna Altena, 79, of Rock Valley died Thursday, Nov. 16, 1995, at the Valley Manor in Rock Valley.
Services were Saturday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley with the Rev. Roger Sparks officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery, Visitation was held
at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Mrs. Altena was born Jan. 5, 1916, on the family homestead, between Orange City and Sioux Center, the daughter of Ben and Winnie (Hubers) Vanden Berg, She graduated from Western Academy at Hull and then taught country school north of Rock Valley.
She married David Altena Feb. 14, 1941, at Rock Valley. The couple farmed south of Rock Valley until 1948 when they farmed near Luverne, MN. She was organist at the Luverne Christian Reformed Church.
They retired and moved to Rock Valley in 1962. On Jan. 27, 1994, they moved to Valley Manor.
Mr. Altena died July 26,1995. Survivors include three sisters, Gert DeRuyter and Bernice DeGroot, both of Rock Valley and Winifred and her husband, Dick Altena of Ireton.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gerrit Vanden Berg; and a sister, Mrs. George (Celia) Vande Kamp.
