John was the youngest of four children born to Samuel Lynn and his second wife Michel Perrine. John moved to Nebraska to live with his older brother Edward and Edward's family after both of their parents died. On Dec. 14, 1880 he married Sarah Jane Rodgers in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. They had three children: Cora Cathaline 1882-1901, Everett B 1889-1946, and Ralph William 1893-1977. John worked as a day laborer for the railroad, and as a night watchman. His wife Sarah died in 1944.
