Everett was born second of three children to John Dunber Lynn and Sarah Jane Rodgers in Nebraska. He enlisted May 7, 1917 and served as a private in F Company in the 67th Artillery; he was discharged from the military on March 20, 1919. He and his younger brother Ralph lived with his parents until they both died. Ralph attended a year of college and worked variously as a laborer, cement worker and as a grave digger before he died. He did not marry.
