According to historical records, Roswell served as a drummer boy in the Continental army for three months during the Revolutionary War and he also served as a private in the War of 1812.
He married Mary Polly Barnett on 11 January 1798 in Christianberg, Virginia, daughter of John and Hannah Barnett. Their children were: Moses, Sarah, John, Rebecca Elizabeth, Ellen, Thomas, Amanda and Sarah Jane. About 1815, they moved to Ripley County, Indiana, where Roswell served as the first treasurer of Ripley County from 1818-1822.
He died in 1837 and was buried on the Johnson family farm. Later, the markers of his grave and others were moved to nearby Bethel Cemetery by the Ripley County Historical Society.
