Rev. Leo Hargarten, 89, founder of several Society of the Divine Word institutions in England and Ireland, died Sunday at the society's residence in north suburban Techny after a long illness.
Ordained in 1930, Father Hargarten spent most of his career with the missionary order in publishing and educational work.
In 1934, the Milwaukee native founded the Word, a magazine published in Ireland and circulated worldwide.
He served as first superior of the society's England region. He also was the first rector of the society's minor seminary in Droitwich, England, and founder of St. David College and St. Gregory House there.
From 1960 to 1965, Father Hargarten was the superior at SVD House, a hostel for students attending the University of Dublin. During the next four years, he was vice-provincial for the society's western province headquartered in Riverside, Calif. While there, he also served as chaplain at St. Teresita Hospital in Monrovia.
After retiring from full-time ministry for health reasons in the late 1970s, Father Hargarten served as a substitute priest and chaplain throughout the United States. He moved to the Divine Word residence at Techny last year.
