"Manslaughter Charge Filed Against Lee"

Edward Allen Lee, 21 year-old Negro accused of throwing a bottle that hit and killed another youth last Saturday, was charged with manslaughter Thursday in a true information filed by County Attorney Willis A Glassgow. Lee was given until 10 am Tuesday to plead to the charge at arraignment Thursday in Judge Floyd Philbrick's court. Bond was set at $2,500. Lee is accused in the death of THOMAS KEHNE, 23, of 1535 A avenue NE. Kehne was found dead in his apartment Tuesday afternoon. The fatal incident early last Saturday occurred in front of a Negro tavern at Ninth avenue and Fourth street SE. Police said Kehne was riding in a car, and that Lee, standing in front of the tavern, threw an empty pint gin bottle at the car. The bottle went through the window of the car and struck Kehne on the head, officers said. Kehne's companion took him to St Luke's hospital, where he was treated and sent home to rest. He apparently died a few hours later, but his body wasn't found until Tuesday. Services for Kehne were conducted in Cedar Memorial cemetery Wednesday by the Rev Floyd Hinshaw. Kehne, a member of St James Methodist church, is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Harold A Kehne; a sister, Mrs Hay Edwards, and a grandmother, Mrs F S Kehne, all of Cedar Rapids.

"Lee Sentenced to Eight Years in Penitentiary"

Edward Allen Lee, 22 year old Cedar Rapids youth who was found guilty of manslaughter March 4, Tuesday was sentenced to a term; not to exceed eight years in the Fort Madison penitentiary. Judge J E Heisermari imposed the sentence after over-ruling a motion for a new trial filed by Lee's attorneys, John B Reilly and Clinton E Shaeffer. Lee was found guilty by a jury of the Oct 2 death of THOMAS A KEHNE, 23. The state charged that Kehne died of head injuries suffered when he was struck by an empty pint gin bottle thrown by Lee. In addition to the penitentiary term, the judge sentenced Lee to pay a fine of $25 and court costs. The fine is required by the Iowa law covering manslaughter convictions.
