Alice Moore Bates of Winston-Salem passed away on Monday, May 21, 2012 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Winston-Salem. She was born August 13, 1918 to Edmund and Lou Moore of Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by Gene Bates, her husband of 37 years, as well as three sisters, six brothers, and two beloved sons-in-law, H.C. (Joe) Flynt and Sam Sapsay. Alice is survived by two daughters: Mary Lou Flynt of Marietta, Georgia and Martha Sapsay of Winston-Salem; and a niece, Audrey (Oscar) Thomason of Winston-Salem. Her grandchildren are Karen Sapsay of Winston-Salem, Butch (Annalyce) Flynt of Suwanee, Georgia, Christy (Rich) Ayers of Suwanee, Georgia, Mary (Steven) Cline of Advance, and Annette Groseclose of Winston-Salem. Her great-grandchildren are Drew Dockter, Bryce Flynt, and Abby Grace Flynt. Her special friend is Donna Denny of Winston-Salem. Known by many as Maw Maw, Alice was an active member of Winston-Salem Friends Meeting for many years. She retired from Belk after 19 years of service. She enjoyed activities centered on her church and family, and she loved keeping in touch with her many friends by telephone and through cards and letters. Our family has fond memories of Maw Maw's laughter and cheerfulness, her funny stories, and her famous banana puddings. The family would like to thank her church family and many friends who visited her and supported us through her illness and death. We would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Forsyth Medical Center and Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation Center, and to the staff and volunteers at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Winston-Salem Friends Meeting, 3151 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, Meals on Wheels, 502 N. Broad Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101, or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family will receive friends at Salem Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Street, Winston-Salem on Tuesday, May 22, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A service of celebration will be held at Winston-Salem Friends Meeting, 3151 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem on Wednesday, May 23, at 2:00 p.m. with Philip Raines and Judith Dancy officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
