COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Henry Leon Shelby, 83, of Cookeville, will be held Friday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ in Cookeville.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at Anderson-Bend Cemetery in Hickman County.

Family will receive friends today, Thursday, Sept. 18, from 5-8 p.m. at the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and Friday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Mr. Shelby died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Bethesda Health Care Center.

He was born Nov. 20, 1924, in the Shady Grove Community of Hickman County to the late Walter and Mattie Harbison Shelby.

Mr. Shelby graduated from Columbia Central High School in 1942, and received his degree in mechanical engineering from Tennessee Technological University in 1950.

He was a plant manager of the Keene Corporation in Cookeville from 1965 until 1971, when he became director of physical plant and campus planning at Tennessee Tech University, a position he held for 23 years.

He was president of the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce in 1970.

Mr. Shelby had been a member of Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ since 1965, where he served as an elder for a number of years.

His family includes his wife of more than 61 years, Sarah Anderson Shelby (whom he married June 19, 1947, in Nashville); a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Michael E. and Jill Shelby of Franklin; a brother and sister-in-law, Samuel E. and Mary Shelby of Nashville; two sisters, Flora Adair and Alberta Harman, both of Nashville; and two sisters-in-law, Christine Vaden of Union City and Francis Calvin of Nashville.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Shelby was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Shelby.

Memorial donations may be made to the Upper Cumberland Christian Homes, 790 State Street, Cookeville, TN 38501, or to Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Inc., 410 Allied Drive, Nashville, TN 37211.

Charles Williamson, Robert Gardenhire and Dr. Jann Cupp will officiate the funeral services.
