Evelyn (Evy) Gehrke, age 83, a resident of Manitowoc Health Care Center, Manitowoc, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 1, 2005 at the center.

Evy was born on April 27, 1921, in Frankfort, Michigan, daughter of the late Edward and Alma (née Raymond) Steinberg. She was a graduate of Frankfort High School with the class of 1939.

On Aug. 26, 1939, Evy married Clarence "Fritz" Gehrke in Sheboygan. He preceded her in death on May 19, 1992. Evy and Fritz owned and operated the Beacon Lunch at North Eighth Street from 1936 until 1947. They then operated the Town and Country Club on South 10th and Viebahn streets from 1948 until 1954. Evy was also employed at Mirro Aluminum and Lab Core of Manitowoc for 18 years until her retirement. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 26, 1989.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Judith E. and Kenneth E. Novak, Manitowoc; one son: Richard Gehrke, Grand Rapids, Mich.; one daughter-in-law: Marion Gehrke, Madison; eight grandchildren: Scott and Kurt Hall, Chad Martin, Sally Jo Gehrke, Eric Gehrke, Kristin Gehrke, Grant Gehrke and Kassandra Gehrke; four great-grandchildren: Katheryn Hall, Dakota Fischer, Hunter Gehrke and Alysse Gehrke. Evy is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son: Butch Gehrke; 14 brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Entombment will follow at Knollwood Mausoleum.

Evy has now joined her beloved Fritz. They are not lost who find the light of sun and stars and God.
