Melvin G. Hanke

Melvin G. Hanke, 78, formerly of 22418 Rockville Road, Kiel, passed away on Sunday Feb. 9, 2003 at Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein, where he was lovingly surrounded by his family.

He was born July 19, 1924 in Charlesburg, a son of the late August and Rose Knier Hanke. Mel attended Ss. Peter and Paul Grade School and Kiel High School.

On Sept. 2, 1953 he married Agnes Schmitz at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, New Holstein. Agnes preceded him in death on March 2, 2002.
Mel served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Honolulu in the South Pacific Theater. He was an independent trucker for many years and later worked for the Tri-County Coop as a petroleum distributor until retirement.
Mel was a charter member and past commander of the Kiel V.F.W. Post 6707. He served as color guard for the Kiel Municipal Band and was a volunteer for the Kiel Meals on Wheels program for many years.

Survivors include his children, Joanie Hanke and her husband, James Stacy, Olympia, Wash. Diane Grogan and her husband, James of Reno, Nev., Dan Hanke and his wife, Mary Anhalt, of Bartlet, Ill., and Paula Hanke Boccio and husband, Frank of Tillson, N.Y. Mel is further survived by three granddaughters, Taylor, age 9, Alaina, age 4 and Leah, age 1 1/2, who will miss their Pappa very much. He is further survived by four sisters, Eileen Stemper, LaVerne Nourigat, Lucille Stumpges, and Bernice Neely.

Mel was preceded in death by one brother, Orville Hanke and one sister, Alice Gau.

A Funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel with the Rev. Loren Nys S.D.S. officiating. Entombment will take place at Knollwood Mausoleum, Manitowoc.
Friends may call at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 Sixth St., Kiel, on Wednesday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. when brief family rites will be held.
In lieu of flowers , a memorial has been established in Melvin's name.
Melvin's family is grateful for thee tender loving care he received from the staff at the Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center and for all the treats has many visitors provided.
