Gutman, Jerome John (Jerry) (Oct. 19, 1920-Sept. 8, 2010 –husband of LaVerne Radandt [married April 26, 1947 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, City of Manitowoc] –son of William Gutman and Ann Breu –born in St. Nazianz but grew to young adulthood in Sumantra, Montana –in September of 1938, he and his parents moved back to St. Nazianz –starting in 1939, worked at his father’s oil and lumber company at 306 South Fourth Avenue in St. Nazianz –in 1942 joined the military –was wounded at Snake River, Dutch New Guinea on June 23, 1944 –remained in the military, serving with the Army of Occupation in Korea –after returning from service he helped run his father’s oil and lumber business until purchasing those businesses on Dec. 31, 1960 –ran these businesses until selling on Oct. 14, 1974 –was assistant fire chief for 31 years, retiring in 1983 –on May 1, 1951 purchased the vacant lot at 104 South Sixth Avenue in St. Nazianz and had a house built –lived here until his death in 2010) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 6, Row 6, Lot16] [marriage record Manitowoc 37-188] [death record Manitowoc 124-19]

JEROME J. GUTMAN, age 89, of 104 S. 6th St., St. Nazianz, died on Wednesday evening, Sept. 8, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.Jerome was born on Oct. 19, 1920, in St. Nazianz, son of the late William and Anna (Breu) Gutman. He grew up in Sumatra, Montana, attending school in Sumatra and graduating with the class of 1938. In Sept. 1938, he moved to St. Nazianz with his parents and attended Manitowoc Business College for one year. Jerome worked for his father at Gutman Oil & Lumber Company from 1939 to 1942. He then entered the Military Service in 1942 serving Stateside, and then in New Guinea where he received his Purple Heart for wounds received in action at Snake River, Dutch New Guinea June 23, 1944.
He made the initial landing on Luzon, Philippine Island. Jerome was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge for Meritorious Service after serving 218 consecutive days of active combat. He also served a short tour of duty in Korea with the Army of Occupation. Jerome returned to St. Nazianz and went into the business with his father, operating the business until his retirement in 1974. On April 26, 1947, he married the former LaVerne Radandt at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Jerome was a charter member of the American Legion Post No. 477. He was the Assistant Fire Chief for 31 years, retiring in 1983 and a past 33 year member of the St. Nazianz Lions and served as a past president.

He was also preceded in death by two grandchildren: Greg and John Gutman; a sister and brother-in-law: Hugh and Alice Cumming; four brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law: Fred and Agnes Radandt, George and Marcella Radandt, Elmer and Leona Heinz, Roland and Claribel Schaus, and Mary Radandt; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Fred and Emma Radandt.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Michael Bigley, with burial at St. Gregory Catholic Church Cemetery, St. Nazianz.
Graveside military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post No. 477 of St. Nazianz.
