Sr. Julia Fala, OSF, (formerly S. Teresina) of Stella Niagara, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2013, Mt. St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, NY. She was born Julia A. Fala, in Columbus, OH, on October 22, 1923, a daughter of the late Alphonso and Pia (Ettorre) Fala.
Sister Julia entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity at Stella Niagara and made her profession of vows on September 3, 1944. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rosary Hill (Daemen College) in 1966. Sister Julia taught at St. Joachim School and St. Lawrence School both in Buffalo, at Our Lady of Lebanon in Niagara Falls and at St. Joseph School in Gowanda, NY.
She returned to Columbus, Ohio in 1959, where she taught at Sacred Heart School, St. Paul School in Athens, St. Rose School in New Lexington and at St. Leo School in Columbus. Sister was at St. Vincent Children's Center, where she was a tutor for Spanish-speaking immigrants and a remedial reading teacher for grades 6-11. She was also at St. Ann Hospital in Columbus, working in the medical records department and then volunteering at the hospital. Sister Julia retired at Stella Niagara in September 2011.
She is survived by four sisters, Clara and Shirley Fala, Jean (Namie) Rizek, Joan (Charles) White and one brother Carlo (Rita) Fala, also many cousins, nieces and nephews. Sister Julia was the sister of the late Al and Lillian Fala.
