He was a carpenter and cabinet maker and built many structures in Washington County, Indiana. Beck's Mill, still standing, was erected under his direction in 1857. During the 1833 cholera scourge in Salem, he made many coffins for the victims. When he died in 1872, he was buried in the Mill Creek Cemetery, but several years later a son, Samuel, had the remains moved to Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem, Washington, Indiana
