After the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America joined the war, like so many young men, Welch enlisted on 28 Feb 1942. At the time of the war, he had completed grammar school and was working as a semi-skilled brakeman for the railroad. Welch served in the Army from 28 Feb 1942 until 19 Aug 1945.
