John A'tsi Arch (Cherokee) came in Jan 1819 to the Brainerd Mission, Hamiltin Co., TN; he was so ragged and dirty looking that he was at first refused admission. He carried his only possession, a gun, and had heard of Brainerd Mission and traded the gun for clean clothes and was admitted to the school.

He became a diligent student and was soon able to serve the mission as its chief interpreter. During his stay at the mission, he traveled many miles with the missionaries, interpreting hundreds of sermons and private conversations. In 1824, he made the first use of Sequoyah's Alphabet when he translated a portion of the New Teastament in the Cherokee language. [Source: http://www.hctgs.org/History/early_chattanooga.htm]
