The early settlers of Newport Township, were engaged in the Indian and Pennamite wars. The inhabitants of Newport Township had to depend entirely upon the grist-mill of Mr. Chapman, on Nanticoke creek, for the grinding of their grain. This mill was threatened by the Indians in 1780, and was saved by a lieutenant, a sergeant and nine privates. After this mill had become useless, William Jackson built one on Newport creek. This was the last grist-mill in the township.
