A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 11 as a private with Co. D, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged at term's end September 18, 1864, at Berryville, Virginia.
In 1888, he moved to Shippensburg, Cumberland County, where he died at his daughter Anna's home from "infirmities of age with arthromatous condition of blood vessels & tendency to softening of the brain."

Jacob Charles, an aged and much esteemed resident of Shippensburg, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George E. Helfrich, 229 East Orange street, Sunday morning at 12:50 o'clock, aged 80 years, 3 months and 14 days, death following an illness of over two months from the infirmities of age.
Mr. Charles was born near Liverpool, Perry county, and spent his early life in that vicinity. He was a son of Jacob and Elizabeth Detrich Charles both natives of this vicinity. At the breaking out of the Civil War Mr. Charles enlisted in Co. D, 47th Regt. Pa. Vol. Inf., and continued in the service until 1864, spending the last two years of his enlistment in the Quartermaster's Department in Key West, where he rendered valuable service.
Following his honorable discharge from the army, he returned to Liverpool where he continued to reside until 1888, when he moved to Shippensburg and engaged in the mercantile business, conduction a grocery store for many years in the room now occupied by the M.H. Morris grocery.
About 7 years ago Mr. Charles retired from business and following the death of his wife five years ago, he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Helfrich, at whose home he died. He was a member of the Lutheran church and of the G.A.R. and was widely known and much revered in this community.
He is survived by these children; E.F. Charles and Mrs. Lottie E. Dickle of Duncannon; E.F.L. Charles, of Atlantic City, N.J.; Mrs. Elizabeth M. Leppard of Duncannon, and Mrs. Anna L. Helfrich, of Shippensburg; also by two brothers, Ira and Eli Charles of Liverpool.
The funeral was held from the Helfrich home Tuesday at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by the Rev. Henry W. Snyder, pastor of Memorial Lutheran church, assisted by Rev. W.R. Picken, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. Internment was made in Spring Hill cemetery.
