Andrew was the son of George and Janet (Ballantyne) Oliver. Born in Scotland, the family came to the United States when Andrew was four. They first settled in the "Village of Chicago". He moved to Wayland and with his brother founded a furniture company. He was also one of the founding members of the Allegan Congretional Church. married Williamine Kelley and they adopted Estelle Smith when her mother Anna (Hoyt) Smith passed away.

Andrew and Williamine were much loved by Estelle and her family. Estell married Ernest Hulley. They named their first male child Oliver in honor of that love. Trajectly, he passed in infancy. When their second son was born, he was then named Oliver. Their first son is buried with the Oliver family.
