William Sweeney, Trucksville, Dies
Injuries suffered in a fall at his home nine weeks ago caused the death yesterday afternoon of William Sweeney, 94, of 57 Orchard Street, Trucksville. One of the best known men in railroad circles in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Mr. Sweeney died at 4:50 p. m. in General Hospital.
Mr. Sweeney was former assistant superintendent of the Lehigh and Susquehanna Division of the Central Railroad of New Jersey.
Mr. Sweeney, a former resident of Ashley and Wilkes-Barre, resided in Trucksville the last eight years. Born in County Cork, Ireland, October 3, 1962, he came to this country in 1882. He was educated in the National Schools of Ireland. For more than a year he was employed in the mines of the old Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Company at Ashley.
In 1883 he was employed as a brakeman by the Jersey Central Railroad and rose in the ranks to assistant superintendent in 1910. He retired April 30, 1938, after completion of 55 years service with the railroad.
He was active in the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, being a charter member of the Jersey Central Lodge. His wife, the former Ann Coyle, died December 24, 1927.
He was a member of St. Therese's Church, Trucksville, and the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of Damien Council, Knights of Columbus, Jim Thorpe.
Surviving are children, William F., Thomas B., both of Washington, D. C.: Helen and Mrs. Mary MacNeils, at home; two grandchildren, William J. MacNeils and P. J. Sweeney, both of Washington, D. C. A daughter, Sister Mary Nazarius, IHM, died October 12, 1953.
Funeral will be held from the McLaughlin Funeral Home, 416 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston, Friday Morning at 9.30. A requiem mass will be celebrated at 10, in St. Therese's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Hanover Township. Friends may call tonight, 7 to 10, and Thursday, 2 to 5 and 7 to 10.
