Esther Lanners, age 80, of Alexandria, died Wednesday, March 19, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, March, 24 at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria with burial to follow in St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM with a Prayer Service and Rosary at 7:30 PM on Sunday, March 23, at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria.

Esther Lanners was born July 23, 1927 to Peter R and Mary E. (Brings) Kayser on a farm East of Emery, SD.

Her father passed away when she was five years old.

She attended country school until fifth grade then they moved to Alexandria where she attended Alexandria School thru ninth grade. She then went to work at Dhondts Caf.

In 1948 she married Bernard Butts Lanners. They lived by Farmer, SD and she worked at Mitchell Laundry for 12 years. In 1954 they moved to Alexandria where she worked 14 years at Piggott Cleaners in Mitchell. In 1969 she started working the night shift in the New Born Nursery at St. Joseph Hospital where she continued working for 24 years until retirement.

Esther was president of St. Mary Sacred Heart League several times. She was also President of the National Catholic Society of Foresters, Ct. 469 for many years. She held office in the American Legion Auxiliary, and a Cub Scout Den Mother five years. She taught CCD at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church for 40 years. She also worked as the cleaning lady for Father Deskiewiez for 10 years and Father Robert Fox for 18 years all while working the night shift at the Hospital.

She is survived by her two sons: Kevin (Lori) Lanners, Alexandria, SD; and Mark Lanners, Harrisburg, SD; Terry Kayser, Mitchell, SD; Linda Assid, Sioux Falls, SD and Ron Kayser, Rockford, IL, Rich Kayser (deceased) whom she helped raise, five grandchildren: Beau, Brady, Bailey, Brittney, and Hailey Lanners.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bernard in 1983, her parents; three brothers: Ray, Harry and Walt Kayser; two sisters, Eva Stern and Helen Ward, along with several nieces and nephews.
