I do not know a great deal about Leo. Only that he was a button maker from Lodz, Russia. He hand carved a cameo that is still in the family. According to family legend, Leo found my great grandmother wandering the streets of New York after she immigrated alone at the age of 14. She claims that she was a stow away and I can find no mention of her on passenger lists of that time. Leo was said to have felt sorry for her and took her to his home to provide her with food and shelter. He married her soon after. They had two children, Martha and Rose. Martha died of diphtheria at the age of one year and six days.
Elsie, his wife and mother of Martha and Rose, was said to have been frustrated by Leo's age and Leo either divorced her or as my mother said; "let her go" to be with another man, George Haegemann, whom she later married. Leo remained a part of her life however, and was a good grandfather to his daughters daughter, Elynor (my mother).
