World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Wiltshire, England, he served as a Sergeant in the 3rd Wessex Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, British Army. In actions near Arras, France, on April 5, 1917, Sergeant Gosling was in charge of an ammo supply party bringing shells to the mortar position on the line. Suddenly when a faulty cartridge of a motor fell 10 yards from the trench, Sergeant Gosling sprang out and lifted the nose of the bomb which had sunk into the ground. He then unscrewed the fuse and threw it on the ground where it immediately exploded, saving the lives of the mortar detachment crew. For most conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 14, 1917. After the war Gosling, was a farmer and ran a shop in Wroughton, Wiltshire. During World War II, he served as a Major in the Home Guard. He died at his home in Wroughton, at the age of 52.
