In July 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early demonstrated against Washington, DC and after a skirmish retreated from Maryland to Virginia. The remains of seventeen unknown Confederate soldiers were recovered and buried in a mass grave at Grace Episcopal Church, 1607 Grace Church Road Silver Spring, Maryland 20910.

The granite memorial was vandalized with spray paint on June 14, 2020 and then the upper portion was toppled over on June 17th. It was left on the ground until August 15, 2020 when it was removed to an unknown location.
