It is believed that Hilda first travelled to Hamburg to board a ship to go to Liverpool. Hilda boarded the ship SS Dominion in Liverpool on November 10, 1906 with her three children, Bert age 4, Olga age 2, Katie age 3 months. They arrived Portland, Maine on November 20, 1906 at 3:10pm. Hilda and her young children travelled with her brother-in-law and her sister Lydia as the authorities would not let Hilda travel alone. She traveled using their surname. On the passenger list, she is listed as Rosenthal with 3 children. Her sister and brother-in-law were not allowed to board the ship, and in the end, she traveled alone. They arrived in Leduc, Alberta, via the railway. Her husband had arrived earlier in April 1906. They homesteaded on a farm with much difficulty as the the land was very poor. The land was cleared of trees and bush with oxen and later plowed with horses. The house was very small, and the children had to sleep in one room.
About 1924, while all the children were still at home, they spent a year in the US working, probably in Kenosha, Washington, where Hilda had family.
When they left Edmonton, son Bert and his wife, who had been living with them, bought their house. Hilda and Adolf moved to Vancouver in 1937 and resided at 625 E 48th Avenue, Vancouver. It was a large two story house, they rented the upstairs for income. Hilda taught herself to read and write, and could crochet a replica of anything she saw in a store.
