Jane's given name was Jeanette Pauline. She was named in honor of her paternal Grandmother Jeannette Pauline Jones Beckwith. The new baby arrived exactly one year to the day after Grandmother Beckwith passed away. The new baby shared the name Jeannette, with a cousin. So to avoid confusion, she was nicknamed "Jane". She went by this name the rest of her life. Jane grew up in Ely, Nevada as an only child. She attended Las Vegas High School. Around the end of her Junior year, 1943, she left Nevada. Leaving her parents home, she went to live with her Grandmother in Michigan. She attended Covert High School her Senior year, graduating from there in 1944. She then moved to the Windy City of Chicago. While there, she lived at the Y.W.C.A. and went to school to become a laboratory technician. It was while on a return visit to her Grandmother's Michigan home that she met a handsome sailor. He too, was just visiting his Grandmother who happened to be the next door neighbor of Jane's Grandmother. That sailor turned out to be Robert Brown, and the two married on April 20, 1946. Two daughters were born to this union.
