Miss Ellen McNulty was one of the first school teachers in Attala County, Mississippi. The daughter of Irish immigrants, she came to Attala County from New York prior to the Civil War. One of her first assignments was teaching for the children of William and Allen Dodd in the Bluffsprings community. In the 1890's Miss McNulty, along with her sister, Annie (also a teacher), opened the Male and Female Institute in what is now Jason Niles Park in Kosciusko. Annie married Micajah Adolphus Clark and they had five children, including Mrs. Edward Coleman, wife of Dr. Coleman.I took a special interest in Miss Ellen McNulty because she is one of my great grandfather's namesakes. He was named William McNulty Noah, his middle name in honor of the school teacher who never married but dedicated her life to educating the children of Attala County. Will Noah went on to establish the Kosciusko Herald (later the Star-Herald) and also served as Mayor and postmaster of Kosciusko. Ellen McNulty(Aug 31, 1838 - Aug 13, 1911) is buried next to her sister's family in the Kosciusko City Cemetery.
