Charles "Chuck" Prater, age 84, of Mt. Sterling formerly of Morehead, passed away Friday afternoon, March 29, 2013, in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Cooper Drive in Lexington after an extended illness.

He was born April 6, 1928 in Garrett, Ky., to the late Elliott Prater and Martha Smith Moore.

He attended the Bowen Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Chuck was a United States Air Force Veteran having served in the military occupation of Japan after WW II. He was the owner and operator of A-1 Chuck's Electric for over 40 years and was a former insurance agent. He was a pilot and enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and camping. Chuck was an inventor and held the patent on a camper top designed for the Jeep CJ5.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, and four sisters, Betty Holbrook, Kathleen Aab, Audrey Gaitskill and Wanda Prater.

Survivors include his wife Mary Jo Williams Prater who he married July 6, 1985.

Two daughters, Martha (Ed) Walsh and Freda (Chuck) Underwood both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., one son, Danny Prater of Jupiter, Fla., one brother, Wayne (Georgia) Prater of Lima, OH., one sister, Billie Leis of Sebring, Fla., two half-brothers, Elliott (Wilma) Prater, Jr., and Eddie (Darlene) Prater both of Kenton, OH., three half-sisters, Geraldine Lewis of Kenton, OH., Irene Lane of Columbus, OH., and Christine Parr of Alger, OH., and one step-sister, Rheeta Burrell of Elida, OH., seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, father-in-law, Roger Williams and his wife Dee, and brother-in-law, Sam Williams all of Winchester, Ky.

Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home, with Rev. John Hanna officiating. Graveside services with military rites will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, in the Machpelah Cemetery in Mt. Sterling.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Pall Bearers will be Cory Phelps, Stewart Williams, Zane Stafford, Neil Davenport, Sam Williams, II, Eddie Prater and Mike Holbrook.

Honorary bearers will be Grandsons and Great-Grandsons.
