Val Mousel Dead

The sudden death of Val Mousel last Monday morning came as sad news to his many friends and a severe shock to his loving wife and relatives. Mr. Mousel had been employed as delivery man in Broders. Bros and Tagges department store the past few months and appeared to be in the best of health, and always cheerful and obliging to the people with whom he came in contact.

On Thursday morning of last week he was suddenly stricken with sickness while at the store and it proved a difficult task for him to walk to his home in the northeastern part of town. The deceased has been afflicted with nature the past eight months but had not been bothered to any extent with the disease until the day mentioned.

Dr. Cram, of Sheldon was called and assisted by local physicians performed an operation, but little relief was given thereby and the sufferer passed away early Monday morning.

Deceased was 33 years, 8 months and 2 days old. Was born in Jackson county. Iowa. He leaves a wife and a baby boy, together with other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral was held at the German Lutheran church Wednesday at 1 o'clock, services being conducted by Rev. R. Schmeichen, aud, the remains were laid to rest in the Hartley cemetery. We understand the deceased carried a life insurance policy of $1,000 in the Yeoman lodge.

Mousel family research suggests Valentine Mousel, son of Peter Mousel and Maria Reichling, was born April 30, 1869 at St Donatus, Jackson County, IA. He is listed as age 2 with his family in the 1870 US Census for Tete Des Mortes township [later known as St Donatus], Jackson County IA. He married Mary L Adolph on September 24, 1902 in Woodbury County IA. They were the parents of Lawrence Nicholas Mousel (1904-1977)[162658386].

--- The birth date mentioned in his obituary and on his gravemarker is in error. Perhaps there was confusion with the birthdate of his first cousin, also Valentine Mousel, son of Jacob Mousel and Paulina Capesius, listed as age 3/12 with his family in the 1870 US Census for Tete Des Mortes township [later known as St Donatus], Jackson County IA.

--- Valentine, son of Peter Mousel and Maria Reichling, has a brother Nicholas who is also buried in Pleasant View Cemetery [Find A Grave Memorial# 154955383]. Their first cousin Valentine Mousel, son of Jacob Mousel and Paulina Capesius, is buried at Dell Rapids, Minnehaha County SD [Find A Grave Memorial# 28246309].
