She was a graduate of Cromwell High School in Cromwell, Indiana. She was formerly married to George McKelvey and Clifford Rose.

Betty moved to Marshall in 1936. She was employed at Win Schuler's, Hemmingsens Drug Store, she owned Baker Brothers Dry Cleaners selling it in 1960, she was then employed with Production Credit Association, and Hennicks Luggage and Leather until she retired in 1981. Betty was very active with her children in PTA, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She was a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church of Marshall and Chicago.

Throughout her life Betty was extremely proud of her military service. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 where she earned the rank of Corporal. She was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma until she was honorably discharged in December of 1944 to come home and care for her ill mother. Betty actively volunteered for the Marshall American Legion Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart in Battle Creek. She spent 40 plus years volunteering at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek where she received numerous awards. The vets were near and dear to her soul. She also was a volunteer at the Marion E. Betty is survived by her two children, Phillip (Pamela) McKelvey of Orland Park, IL and Sandra (Michael) Gould of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Bradley O'Neill of Biloxi, MS, Heather (Chris) Husiak of Battle Creek, Meredith (Ryan) Sherrod of Kalamazoo; 5 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Logan and Nicholas O'Neill of Biloxi, MS, Isabella Rose, and Conor Husiak of Battle Creek; brother, C. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and 5 siblings, Evelyn Murray, Gwen Burley, Clyde Shew, Jim Shew, and Thomas Shew.

Betty was quite the talker and could strike up a conversation with anyone. She had many friends at Lakeview Meadows and the Heritage Assisted Living whom she cared about immensely. She was loved and will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
