James A Bayard, Jr., Delaware US Senator, employed her as a domestic and later appointed her housekeeper. Subsequently she supervised her nieces Anna Honor Hart, Catherine Hart, and Bridget Lalley who were also employed as housekeepers for the Senator. Upon his death Senator Bayard left Margaret an annuity for life, honoring the request of his late wife. Afterwards she lived in the Philadelphia home of Annie Hart Lalley until her death.
