THOS. GARFIELD CALLED BY DEATH

Brother of Martyred President
Died At Jamestown Home Yesterday

By the death of Thomas Garfield,
a brother of the martyred president,
at Jamestown, Ottawa county, yes-
terday morning the little town has
lost one of its oldest and most re-
spected citizens. Mr Garfield had
lived continuously in Jamestown
for the past 43 years and was well
known throughout the state as a
grand old man. He came to Ohio in
the pioneer days with the rest of
the little family and assisted in
making the home from logs.
When he was but 11 years the fath-
er died and the future president was
at that time only eighteen months
old. So the burden of the work natur-
ally fell upon Thomas. At this time
the family were living in Ohio and
when living became too difficult
here he, at the age of 17 years,
struck out for the wilds of Mich-
igan, arriving in the Grand River
valley in the fall of 1843. That
winter he spent in the logging camps
and returned in the spring with $75,
with which he built a fairly comfort-
able home for his mother.
In 1867 he again came to Michigan
at a time when his brother was on
the road to fame. At that time Thomas
was married and there were three
children, James A., Eliza Elmira and
Florence Evangeline. The family re-
mained in Michigan from that time on.
Mr. Garfield is survived by a son,
James A. Garfield, and a sister of
Jamestown, Mehitabel Trowbridge, of
Los Angeles, Cal. Funeral services
will be held from the Jamestown
residence at 10:30 Friday morning
and from the Hanley church at 11:30.
Interment will be in the Hanley
church cemetery.
