Soledad "Soly" Dietz, 92, of Kankakee, died Wednesday (April 3, 2013) at Presence Our Lady of Victory nursing home. There will be no services. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Interment will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Memorials may be made to Presence Our Lady of Victory. Arrangements are made by ClancyGernon Funeral Home, Bourbonnais.

Soledad was born May 15, 1920, in the Philippines, the daughter of Enrique and Eulogia Hollesca Diazana. She was a survivor of World War II in the Philippines, having lived amid combat during Japanese occupation. During the war, she met her future husband, a U.S. Army soldier who was born in Austria. She married Carl J. Dietz on Dec. 5, 1945, in the Philippines. They came to the U.S., after the war ended and started to raise a family in Chicago. After her husband retired, they moved to a house on the bank of the Kankakee River, where she enjoyed outdoor get-togethers with her entire family. One of her favorite pastimes was sitting on the deck, enjoying nature and the serenity of the river. She also enjoyed cooking authentic Filipino dishes. Her interests included needlework, sewing, ceramic pottery, cake decorating and gardening.

She is survived by four sons, Edward (Remy) Castano, of Hoffman Estates, Michael Dietz, of St. Anne, John (Debbie) Dietz, of Momence, and Vincent (Nancy Lee) Dietz, of Olympia Fields; three daughters, Catherine Dietz, of Orland Park, Nancy Dietz Rago, of Chicago, and Mary (Kerry) Piunti, of Homewood; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2005, and her brothers and sisters.
