Panek owned and operated J&J Garage on Church Street, New Bedford, for 40 years. The business is now operated by his son, Alan Panek. He was the husband of Pauline M. Bertrand and son of the Anthony Panek and Mary Polchlopek. He was a member of the Marine Corps Reserve. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Rochester. He was a member of the Corvair Club and was very proud of the fact that he was a former commissioner of Boy Scouts. Panek was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He was the twin brother of Anthony Panek, Jr., who died just 11 days later on April 29, 2001. John was also the brother of Joan Booker of South Dartmouth and Carol Clermont of Freetown.
