Harrison T Cowan was born in the mountains of North Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served on the USS Hancock. After he married Jennie Anders he moved to Winston-Salem and worked for McLean Trucking as a professional driver. He worked for McLean his entire career and retired because of heart trouble. During his career he won many safe driver and safety awards.

He survived a terrible accident in the mountains of West Virgina during a snowstorm. The truck he was team driving with went off of the mountain and rolled down the side. He was seriously injured, but recovered and returned to driving. But, afterwards he perferred to take some vacation time if a bad snow storm was predicited. Eventually, he had enough seniority to only have runs to Atlanta and/or Richmond.

Because he was a Junior he was known as June by his family, but went by HT at Mclean. He was one of nine children born to Harrison and Eva Cowan in Jackson county, NC.
