Lucile Eleanor Carey of Longmont, Colo. passed away Wednesday, Mary 31, 1995, in Longmont. She was 95.

Born on June 23, 1899 in Creston, Iowa, she was the daughter of John Wesley Ballreich and Clara Eleanor (Carter) Ballreich. She graduated from Creston High School and from Drake University in Des Moines in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education.

Until she moved to Longmont, Colo. from Afton in 1990, almost her entire life was spent in Union County.

She became a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star in 1976; was at one time a member of the Lakeshore Golf and Country Club; a member of the Historical Society and a member of the book committee for the Union County History Book which was published in 1981; a member of the Afton Care Center Auxiliary; a member of the Afton United Methodist Church; and was chosen by the staff of the Afton Star-Enterprise as Mother of the Year in 1982.

She was an elementary school teacher in Union County from 1946 until her retirement in 1956 and also taught in the Huntsville, Ala. school system until 1970 at which time she returned to Afton to become a substitute teacher until 1978.

She married Earl C. Carey on march 11, 1920 in Creston, Iowa. Her husband preceded her in death in 1963.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Carey was preceded in death by her parents, and her two brothers, Raymond and Ivan Ballreich.

Survivors include one son, Edwin R. Carey, Sr. and his wife, Victryn of Simi Valley, Calif., one daughter, Marjorie L. Nelson and her husband, Melvin C. Nelson of Longmont, Colo.; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
