Shibby immigrated to the United States in 1904 shortly after graduating from the University of Tokyo. His original intent was to attend graduate school at the University of Chicago and study architecture. After just a year in Chicago, Shibby decided to travel about and see the U.S. He variously worked as a machinist, circus performer and even a wig maker. Finally, about 1920 he joined up with his good friend Takeo Furukawa in Indianapolis and decided to pursue a career in landscaping. Shibby enjoyed some success as a landscape architect and designed many gardens for private and public places for more than 30 years. The last 10 years of his life, Shibby lived in New Castle where he assisted his life-long friend Frank Flucawa with his flower and garden business on South Memorial Drive.
