Ann C. Michel, 61, of Syracuse, died Sunday at home after a long illness. An engaged civic and business leader, Ann founded Knowledge Systems & Research, Inc. with four other business partners and led the company for the past 21 years as president and CEO. Under her leadership, KS&R grew from a six-employee start up to a leading international market research and management consulting firm with over 200 employees. A 1965 graduate of Syracuse University, Ann returned to Syracuse in 1970 after working in federal and local government in New York City and Rochester. For eight years, Ann served as Director of Federal and State Aid for the City of Syracuse before leaving government to begin her career as a management consultant. Ann served as Chairperson of the City Planning Commission from 1979 to 1994. Most recently she served as co-chair of Syracuse 20/20 helping to guide the future of the City. Ann also served as a Board Member at the Metropolitan Development Association and as Chair of the ProLiteracy Worldwide Board of Directors. Ann was an active member and former Church Moderator at Plymouth Congregational Church. She recently won the inaugural WISE 2004 Distinguished Entrepreneur award, presented by Syracuse University. In addition to her many business and civic accomplishments, Ann was devoted to her family and friends. Surviving are her husband of 39 years, David; her son Bill and daughter Jennifer, both of Chicago; her brother Robert Cooney of Pennsylvania; and her mother Catherine R. Cooney of Syracuse. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2004, at Plymouth Congregational Church, 232 E. Onondaga St., Syracuse. Calling hours will be on Friday, November 26, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m., also at Plymouth Church. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Plymouth Congregational Church, Attention: Ann C.
