At the time of his death Samuel had one known son living, Isaiah. In 1880, Isaiah and his family were located in southwest Missouri in McDonald Co. It can be assumed they moved to MO after the death of Samuel. One of Samuel's death notices paints a picture of a rocky relationship with a son. Who really knows whether the newspaper was merely reporting a colorful story to read and if this was the entire truth.

Mr. Samuel Peterson, for about twenty six years a resident of this county, died a few days ago at the residence of a son near Avoca, at the ripe old age of one hundred years and five months. It is said for years until a few days before his death Mr. Peterson was in the habit of frequently walking to Avoca, a distance of two and a half miles from where he lived. It is also reported that during his declining years he was most shamefully treated by his son, with whom he made his home, and we are informed that on several occasions the unnatural son tried to get his poor old father sent to the county poor house. We do not know as to the truth of these statements, but they are made by responsible persons.

Mr. Samuel Peterson, of Lewin's Grove, probably the oldest person in Pottawattamie County, being 100 years and 5 months old, died last Tuesday. During his last illness he expressed great faith in Jesus, and was known by his neighbors to repair to a secret place in the woods not far from his place of abode, and there offer up his prayers to Deity. His last words were, "Lord, receive my spirit."
