As a 25 year-old Private in a Regiment of the Tennessee Militia, Elijah fought under General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans which defeated the British in January 1815.
At the age of 74, in August 1861, Elijah again enlisted as a Private in a Tennessee Regiment of the Confederate Army which fought at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862.

Gravesite Details
The DeRossett Cemetery is located on private property along Little Cove Road where the DeRossett homestead once stood. There are at least four graves in the woods.
