Son of John Purcell Graham of Scotland and Jennet McNeill of Cumberland Co., NC. He was born in Richmond Co., NC, near Blue's Bridge, a landmark bridge which then marked the boundary for Cumberland Co. and Richmond Co. Blue's Bridge would now be located in Hoke Co., either near or on the Camp MacKall Army training facility.

Alexander Graham died while attempting to secret away food and supplies from Sherman's Army as it marched north through what is now Scotland and Hoke Cos., in North Carolina.
