She attended old Floral College where she studied music and art. On Dec. 31, 1868, she married Angus Fairley Gilchrist, son of John Jacob Rhodes Gilchrist and Effie Fairley. In 1883, Angus died and, at age 37, she was left a widow with three young children to raise - all under the age of ten (10) years. She never remarried.
