Joseph married Catherine Sinclair on Oct. 29, 1867 in Philadelphia. They had three sons William Sinclair, Lawrence, and Donald Sinclair. Lawrence drowned July 3, 1895 while attending summer camp on Salanas Lake in Franklin Co., NY.
Joseph fought in the Civil War, he was a part of the Corn Exchange Regiment. He was shot in the stomach and through the hip in the Battle of Shepherdstown, W.V. He returned to duty 5 months later and fought in Chancellorsville and the Battle of Gettysburg. He was brevetted major for his heroism in the Battle of the Wilderness. He was later involved in the final pursuit to Appomattox. By that time he had become the Ordnance Officer for the 1st Division, Fifth Army Corps.
He became Vice President and insurance Manager in 1906 of Provident's Life Insurance Business.
Both of his sons went to the University of Penn. William joined Provedent as Agency Secretary and Donald earned a Ph.D in in chemistry.
