Obituary of Frances Payne Davis
(June 2, 1924 ~ May 3, 2013)

Gulfport, MS ~ Frances Payne Davis, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 3, 2013 in Gulfport, Mississippi. Frances was born June 2, 1924 in Munson, Florida to Frank Arlington Payne, Sr. and Alma Holloway Payne.

Frances always had funny stories and favorite sayings that she would freely share with everyone. They were endless in number and mostly about her beloved Payne Family. Frances was a devoted and lifetime member of the Easter Star Harmony Chapter 51 for over fifty years. She worked diligently as a night auditor with the Edgewater Gulf and Markham Hotels; and retired from the Gulfport Public School System. Frances woke up every morning and said proudly how much she "loved to go to work."

At Frances' home, you were always greeted as family...with freshly made hot coffee, a warm smile, a hug, and the aroma of some delicious meal still simmering on the stove. She loved nothing more than to spend time with her family. No moss ever grew under her feet. When not preparing a tasty meal, such as her famous chicken and dumplings, potato salad or red beans and rice, she could be found in her garden tending to her larger-than-life collard greens, tomatoes, spicy pepper plants, and her stunning red rose bush. She will always be fondly remembered as someone who "loved to go to work," care for her children, and be a part of the proud Payne Family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, John Horace Davis of Gulfport, MS; her brothers, William Payne, John Payne, and George Payne all of Gulfport, MS; Joe T. Payne, Sr., of Jackson, MS; and Frank A. Payne, Jr., of Grand Bay, AL; and her sister Myrtle Dumas of Jackson, AL. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Byrne (David) of Asheville, NC; her son, John Michael Davis of Gulfport, MS; and her granddaughter, Mary Frances Woods of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; grandson David (Andrea) Byrne of Sandy Springs, GA; and great-granddaughter Lillian Byrne also of Sandy Springs, GA. She is also survived by numerous dearly loved nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dennis Woods, who stayed by Frances' side until she passed; and everyone at the Dixie White House Nursing Home for their unceasing care and dedication.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 6, 2013, at 2:00pm at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery in Gulfport.
