Bridgers Smelley was the son of Moses and Ann Smelley; grandson of Robert Smelley Jr. and Rebecca West Smelley.

He married first to Clary Perkins in Nash County, N.C., on Jan. 25, 1825, and they had 4 children before moving to Georgia:
1. Moses Smelley, born 4 MAY 1827
2. Sarah Caroline Smelley, born 18 OCT 1828 (married John F.M. Tyler)
3. James Raiford Smelley born 4 NOV 1829 (married Cynthia W. Tyler)
4.John Calvin Smelley, born 9 DEC 1834 in North Carolina

Clary Smelley died in Lula, Hall County, Georgia between 1850-60 and he married his second wife Caroline Motes who was the mother of two children.
The family moved from Georgia to Talladega County, Alabama, in 1860-61.
Bridgers Smelley died after 1880 and before 1885. His wife Caroline Motes is said to be buried beside him under a large cedar tree.

The Smelley family cemetery is located among ancient cedar trees behind the Bridgers Smelley home and across the road from John C. Smelley's home, about a msouthwest of Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery on Germany Mountain Road. The Bridgers Smelley home was still standing in 2002. The grave stones are unreadable rocks and deep indentions mark two graves where they have sunken, supposed to be Mr. and Mrs. Bridgers Smelley's graves. It is possible his daughter-in-law Mary Hawkins Smelley is buried there, since she lived directly across the road, though it is generally thought she was buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery (aka "Smelley-Ponder Cemetery") where her husband was later buried although Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery was just a mile away.
