Emil was born on August 8, 1916 in Goodrich, North Dakota, the son of Jacob and Carolina (Engel) Hertz. He grew up and attended school at Goodrich. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was discharged in 1945. He returned to North Dakota and farmed south of Goodrich. Emil married Rose Wagner in Tuttle on October 15, 1946. They continued farming until moving to Bismarck in 1961. Emil worked for Lunn Construction and A & A Metal Buildings until 1980. He also worked part time for Butler MachinelY Company and for United Printing. He retired in 1991.
Emil was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Emil enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, listening to country music and tinkering with old cars.
He is survived by his wife, Rose; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Rita and Al John of Mott, Karen McLean of Minot, Cheryl and Gene Johnson of Aztec, New Mexico, June Hertz of Bismarck, and Gail and Ed Nagel of Bismarck; one son, Michael of Bismarck; three brothers, William of Billings, Montana, Jake of Plentywood, Montana, and Reinhold of Wing; one sister, Lorraine Hayden of Bismarck; 10 grandchildren, Kevin, Rhonda and Nicole John; Dawn Holzer, Lori Hillestad and Justin McLean; Vanessa, Lindsay, and Paw Nagel; and Aubrey Johnson; and six great-grandchildren, Brandon Moser; Joshua and Justine John; Amber Flexhaug, and Kayla and Tess Hillestad; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Ray, Ted, Albert, Herbert and Alvin; and two sisters, Martha Bechtold and Mabel Sauter; and two infant sisters.
