Mr. Abernathy was born on November 17, 1921 in Kingston, GA son of the late T. E. Abernathy and the late Zadie Kelly Abernathy. He was a United States Army veteran proudly serving during WWII. He retired from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and was a member of the Unity Baptist Church. Mr. Abernathy was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Mildred Francis Griffin Abernathy on May 13, 2006; infant daughter, Shirley Abernathy; three sisters, Georgia Mae Thacker, Maggie Thacker, and Almer Abernathy; and four brothers, Otis Abernathy, Joe Abernathy, Virgil Abernathy and Edward Abernathy.
Survivors include two step-daughters, Sheila Parrish and her husband Steve and Leatha Smith all of Aragon; eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; sister, Hillon Womack of Rome; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Graveside services for Mr. Abernathy will be held on Thursday, April 11th at 2:00 pm in the family lot of the Aragon Cemetery with Mr. Billy Abernathy officiating. Military graveside rites will be provided by Brown-Wright American Legion Post #12 Honor Guard.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Jackie Gibbs, Billy Abernathy, Darrell Womack, Kinney Mulche, Hunter Forsyth, and Floyd Bussey. Honorary escorts will be his first wife, Margie Swift Abernathy and Michael Ashmore.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, April 11th from 12 noon until 1:30 pm.
