Former Marshall Resident Dies as Montevideo - Funeral Held at Presbyterian Church, Wednesday - Was Marshall Business Man for Eighteen Years.

Word was received here on Sunday that Mr. Richard Thornson had died at his home at Montevideo. For two or three years he had poor health and during the last year had been a great sufferer. His death occurred Sunday evening at seven-thirty o'clock.

Mr. Thornson was born in 1850 at Leland, Illinois. In 1883 he moved to Blunt, So. Dak., and lived there until 1891 when he moved to Pipestone. After living there two years the family moved to MArshall and lived there until going to Montevideo in 1912 where he conducted a bakery. In 1886, Mr. Thornson was married to Miss Mary Barney. six children were born to them, all of whom survive except Edna, the fifth child, who died in Marshall when three years old. They are Margaret Dolan of Chicago; Theresa Hardy of this city; Grace Hegre, Nellie Mahling and Evelyn of Montevideo.

Soon after coming to Marshall, Mr. Thornson united with the Presbyterian church. He was also a member of the A. O. U. W. lodge at Blunt, So. Dak.

A funeral service was held at Montevideo, Wednesday morning, and in the afternoon at the Presbyterian church here. Rev. McKibbon came here from Madison, So. Dak., to preach the sermon and he was assisted in the service by Rev. G. A. McKinley; and by Rev. Geer of Montevideo. Mr. McKibbon, in speaking of the life of Mr. Thornson, whom he had known so well, said that faithfulness was the word that would describe his life; faithful in business; faithful in the church and faithful in his home. Besides the family those who came here to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Olson of Leland, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Barney and Mrs. J. Kiel of North Dakota; Rev. and Mrs. Geer, Mr. and Mrs. Osborne and Mr. and Mrs. Will Simmons of Montevideo.
