"Richard HOEY Jr. was 7 when the Hoeys sailed for Boston in 1846. On 27 February 1861, at the age of 22, he enlisted in the Union Army and was assigned to Battery B, 2nd U.S. Artillery. His enlistment papers describe him as 5'8" in height, with blue eyes and sandy hair. A photograph taken of him at about this time shows the narrow face and serene expression characteristic of the Hoeys. On February 27, 1864 he received an honorable discharge at Brandy Station, Virginia."
"In March 1865 Richard HOEY Jr. again enlisted in the Union Army, this time as a one-year substitute, and was assigned to Co. D, 15th Maine Infantry. In December 1865 he contracted rheumatism and chronic diarrhea at Cheraw, South Carolina and suffered from these conditions the rest of his life. In 1866 Richard returned home and settled in Webster, MA where mother Ann HOEY joined him following the death of Richard HOEY, Sr.
In 1870 he and Irish-born widow Catherine (Stafford) GRADY were married by the Reverend James W. HOEY."
